Myths About Lawn Fertilization, Debunked

Dec 15, 2023

Keeping your lawn looking great requires a little skill, good information, and a willingness to invest in your yard. Before you contact a professional to clean up your property, to get the most out of your lawn care, you need to be aware of some pesky little myths that are floating around about fertilizer. Let's clear up some of these misconceptions so you can have your best lawn possible this year.

Fertilizer Isn't Necessary

Some people wonder if grass actually even needs fertilizer. Doesn't grass grow just fine on its own? Yes, your grass can technically survive without fertilizer, but that doesn't mean it'll thrive. In order to achieve the pristine yard of your dreams, your grass will need a little helping hand. Just like taking vitamins, exercising, and drinking water, to get the best results, you need to cater to your lawn's health and use some fertilizer.

You Need to Fertilize Frequently

As with many things in life, fertilizer is all about moderation. You need to use fertilizer to get the best results, but that doesn't mean you need to be using fertilizer constantly. According to Bob Vila, you should fertilize your lawn at least twice a year to ensure good overall health. This will keep your grass looking its greenest.

Fertilizer Is the Same as Lawn Food

Fertilizer is used to replenish the nutrients that are depleted from your soil throughout the year. This isn't the same as plant food. Your grass is a plant, and plants actually make their own food. They make their food through the photosynthesis process. If you think of fertilizer as lawn food, you might be tempted to “feed” your lawn often. You should not use fertilizer often, though. Fertilize your lawn twice a year, and your lawn will create its own healthy food.

You Can Use Lawn Fertilizer to Fill in Patches

This myth is really off-base, as fertilizer isn't grass seed. If you have bare patches in your lawn, it's because the grass has died there. To fill in that patch, you need to reseed the area. Fertilizer doesn't contain any grass seeds, therefore, it will not make new grass grow in a bare spot.
